Ski Resorts:

Head to one of three ski resorts near the South Shore. Kirkwood, at more than 7,000 feet above sea level, boasts more snow than any other resort in Tahoe, pushing 140 inches at the base. Heavenly Ski Resort is now home to three new trails beneath the Stagecoach and Galaxy lifts, and the mid-mountain Tamarack Lodge, which opened last season, brings a touch of class to Heavenly’s eat-drink-and-be-merry scene. Meanwhile, in addition to its tubing park, Sierra-at-Tahoe is now equipped with a back-country snow-cat for those adventurous powder-seekers.

Activities:

Must See:

Lake Tahoe Heavenly California Summer Gondola Ride

The Heavenly Gondola ride is a popular summer activity in Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Gondola is Lake Tahoe’s “must-do” experience, a year-round sightseeing opportunity unlike any other! The Gondola is currently operating on its Fall schedule, running daily from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Located one-half block west of Stateline, the Gondola is steps from most major lodging facilities. The eight-passenger cabins take guests 2.4 miles up the mountain in 12 minutes while they enjoy views of Lake Tahoe. Just when it seems the ride can’t get any better, guests arrive at The Deck – a 14,000 square foot mid-station observation platform. Located at 9,123 feet, guests are treated to views of the Carson Valley, Desolation Wilderness and shore-to-shore views of Lake Tahoe.

Fourth Of July Fireworks

Star Spangled Fourth – Lights on the Lake 200X
Fourth Of July Fireworks Celebration Light’s Up Lake Tahoe

The American Pyrotechnics Association rates South Shore’s spectacular Fourth of July fireworks celebration one of the Top 5 displays in the nation.
Set to music, Lights on the Lake is one of the largest and most incredible synchronized displays west of the Mississippi.
Created by Pyro Spectaculars, Inc. and fired by Pyrodigital Consultants, the show runs approximately 30 minutes long and features a wide variety of patterns, lights, designs and shapes. The precisely timed blast offs are synchronized to a soundtrack and controlled via computer. Scheduled to begin at approximately 9:45 PM.

The simultaneous music broadcast can be heard on local stations KRLT-FM 93.9 and KOWL-AM 1490. Launched from an offshore barge, the fireworks are visible from all over town. Below are some of the sweet spots to get a front row seat.

  • The Tahoe Queen and M.S. Dixie II: South Shore’s two Mississippi paddlewheelers offer a unique opportunity to view the light show from the water. Board the Tahoe Queen for a Dinner Dance Cruise or the M.S. Dixie II for a Fireworks Cruise. Both feature live entertainment and fantastic views of the evening’s display. Log onto www.laketahoecruises.com.
  • Tallac Historic Site: The Valhalla Arts & Music Festival will host a holiday barbecue at Tallac Vista. The quiet, off-the-beaten-track spot on Emerald Bay Road has a stunning view looking east across Lake Tahoe toward the fireworks. For more information, log onto www.valhalla-tallac.com.
  • Nevada Beach: Located about two miles east of the Nevada casinos on Elk Point Road, Nevada Beach is the ideal setting for a family barbecue at the beach. A wide, sandy shoreline leads down to the sapphire waters of Lake Tahoe. Charcoal barbecues and picnic tables dot the beach. The view across the lake to the West Shore and Desolation Wilderness is unsurpassed. And the view of the fireworks display is one of the best in town.
  • Regan and El Dorado Beaches: Located right where Highway 50 meets the Lake, these connecting stretches of narrow beach are front and center for the fireworks. Arrive early! These beaches fill up with people who love to be right under the action.
  • Bijou Community Park: Set back from the shoreline on the corner of Johnson and Al Tahoe Blvds., Bijou Community Park affords a great view of the fireworks without the hustle and bustle of the beaches. Amenities at the park include restrooms, a skate park, a disc golf course, a playground, and an exercise circuit. The park is a great setting for families with young children.
  • Baldwin Beach: Located about 5 miles down Emerald Bay Road and backed by the Tallac Historic Site, this narrow stretch of white sand beach has great views looking east toward the downtown area of South Shore. Public parking, restrooms, picnic facilities, fire pits, and barbecue grills are available.

Backcountry Snowmobile Tours
Some of the most rugged and beautiful scenery in North America is just a few minutes away from South Lake Tahoe. And one of the best ways to get deep into that backcountry experience is on a guided snowmobile tour.

We have tours for families, folks who have never been on a snowmobile before, adventurous enthusiasts, and for expert riders. Because of our high-elevation terrain, we have one of the longest snowmobile seasons around, typically lasting from November to April.

Our snowmobile tours include the use of late-model Arctic Cat machines, boots, gloves, helmets, and complimentary shuttle transportation from our tour center in Meyers to base camp in Hope Valley. Warm snowmobile suits are available to rent for ten dollars each. Reservations are required for all tours. Drivers must be at least 15 years old. Children five and under ride free with a parent. Or, for a small charge, they can ride in a specially designed passenger sled towed behind a snowmobile by one of our guides.

3 Great Hikes on Tahoe’s West Shore

Emerald Bay

What child doesn’t want to see a real castle? At Emerald Bay is historic Vikingsholm – an authentic reproduction of an 800 A.D. Norse castle, built here in 1929. There is a paved trail down, but for parents with strollers – beware, since you’ll be pushing it back up the steep hillside. The path is 2 miles roundtrip and has lovely Tahoe views and restful benches. Once there, half-hour castle tours are offered all summer; adults $5, children 6-17 $3, under 6 are free. Find more information at www.vikingsholm.com.

Getting there: From South Lake Tahoe, drive north on Hwy 89 for 9 miles, turning right into the well marked Emerald Bay parking lot. There is a $3 fee to park, and the trail is easily visible.

Eagle Falls

Just across from the Emerald Bay parking lot is the lot and trail head to Upper and Lower Eagle Falls, plus Eagle Lake and the Velma Lakes. The lower falls are visible from the lot, and a 1 mile hike down to the base allows youngsters a chance to see a waterfall up close. There are some stone steps, so strollers aren’t advised. Those wanting a longer hike can head one mile further in to Eagle Lake for a day of water play and picnicking.

Getting there: Nine miles up Hwy 89 from south shore or 20 miles south of Tahoe City, the parking lot is on the west side of the highway. There is a parking fee, and you must file a wilderness permit on site, which is free.

Rubicon Point & Lighthouse

This choice combines a hike with a chance to investigate a disused lighthouse from years gone by. It’s a total loop of 2.5 miles, with only a 200 feet gain in elevation, but there steps carved into the granite, which can be tiring for the very young. The hike offers wonderful views, but there are a couple sections of rock overlook where parents should keep close watch on the children.

Getting there: From Tahoe City, drive south on Hwy 89 for 15.8 miles, before turning left into the D.L. Bliss State Park. Continue driving 1 mile to the parking lot – the trailhead is on the left. Out and back to see the lighthouse (rather than the whole loop) is 1.5 miles.
